Picture this, you’ve been working really hard to meet all these goals you’ve set for yourself or your business. It may have been to release a new range of products for the upcoming season or maybe you’re trying to launch a successful campaign to promote awareness to your brand or services. Whatever the goal may be, you’re working tirelessly every day to reach it. However, as time passes and you spend longer on your project, you notice your motivation is starting to burn out.

Motivation is our driving force to get things done. However, externally driven motivation only gets us so far. Hence why it is important to find ways to sustain a motivation driven mindset. So, today we’re going to provide you with some tips to increase and maintain your motivation for all your big goals!

How can one keep their motivation tank full?

Well, for starters, it’s best to define whether or not you’re using positive or negative thinking for your motivation. Both can work in motivating you, however, positive driving forces are better and easier to commit to than any negative ones.

What sounds better?

Positive: “If I finish this task tonight, I’ll have some time to do an activity I enjoy”.

Negative: “If I don’t finish this task tonight, i’ll get in trouble with my manager”.

As mentioned before, both work in their own way but positive motivation will help you maintain your motivation over negative motivation.

How to keep your motivation from burning out

There are plenty of ways to ensure your motivation is always running on full but we’ve numbered it down to a few of our favourites for this blog.

1. Keep track of any progress made on a goal

This point probably sounds really simple, but you’ll be surprised how well this trick works. Nothing motivates someone better than seeing how much progress they’ve made from when they started. It works for people trying to lead healthier lifestyles, so applying this trick to any goal will help you keep your motivation alive and well! Noting your progress will give you proof of how successful you’ve been since you started!

2. Break your main goals down into sub goals

Nothing burns motivation out faster than long-term goals that require a lot of time and energy. Instead, break your main goal down into smaller objectives, you’re still striving for your main goal but now you’re reaching checkpoints. This is great for motivation because you’ll get the satisfaction of goal completion, driving you forward until you reach the end! Think of this trick like saving checkpoints in a video game.

3. Find positives in goals or tasks you don’t really like

We get it, not every goal or task we set out to do is one we enjoy. Maybe in order for you to progress to the next task of a campaign, you first have to organise all the research data your team collected. And nothing sounds more mind numbing or is a bigger motivation buzzkill than categorising your data into columns A or B. Instead, try and find a positive from this situation to motivate yourself through it. Maybe it’s focusing on getting it done so you don’t have to do it again for this project or maybe it’s getting it done so your team can clearly digest the data and use it to create an awesome solution! However complex or simple the positive is, home in on it and use it as your motivating force!

4. Treat yourself!

You may have heard this popular phrase a lot in modern society, but it holds some serious influential power! Rewarding yourself, or as it’s fondly referred to as ‘treating yourself’, is one great way to keep your motivation tank full! Now, we’re not saying you should splurge your bank account on a spa retreat in Fiji whenever you complete a goal but treating yourself to some personal time or your favourite ice-cream after completing a goal will help keep you maintain your motivation in the long-term.

5. Give your goals an audience

One way to maintain motivation is to give your goals spectators! Announce your goals to your friends or fans on social media or write it down and stick it on your work’s announcement board. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you announce to the world what you’re striving to do. It’s like giving a promise to your spectators that you will reach this goal and it’ll help motivate you to get it done.

Motivation is a rather fickle thing to maintain, however, if you try implementing these tips you may just find it sticking around for a long time. The more motivated you are, the more you’ll reach your goals so you can keep progressing onto the next big thing!
